Swimming is set to make a wave on the UK University sports calendar this weekend with the first event of the season!

The Short Course Championships is a multi-day event that will feature 54 finals in over 20 different lengths in a variety of different styles and which includes individual, relay, and mixed swimming disciplines.

Over 1,500 students from almost 80 UK universities will take their mark at the Championships with the first medals and BUCS points up for grabs. The athletes involved will be determined to get their season off to a successful start!

Where are the Championships held?

This year’s BUCS Short Course Championships will once again be held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre (ISC) in Sheffield.

A state-of-the-art leisure center, Ponds Forge is home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool that seats an impressive 2,600 spectators and has previously hosted both the European Aquatics Championships and Underwater Hockey World Championships.

What is Short Course?

In swimming, the term short course (abbreviated SC) is used to identify a pool that is 25 meters, half the distance of an Olympic pool.

Which disciplines are taking place?

There are five swimming disciplines showcased during the Short Course Championships; Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, and Medley.

All disciplines are raced over a range of distances, from 50m to 1,500m, depending on the event.

Butterfly, Backstroke, and Breaststroke are all raced over three distances; 50m, 100m, and 200m, with several heats determining which swimmers vie for glory in the finals. Longer distances are raced in the Freestyle, Medley, and Relay events.

Each event will have both men’s and women’s races as more than 70 swimmers will be crowned BUCS Champions upon the tournament’s completion.
