Four of the best university futsal teams went head-to-head in this year’s BUCS Championship and Trophy Finals at the University of Wolverhampton.

Futsal, a variant of indoor soccer, has gained significant popularity in recent years and has become a prominent university sport across the UK.

The annual men’s and women’s Championship and Trophy competitions provide a platform for teams to showcase their skills and determine the best teams in the country, featuring some of the most talented players in university futsal.

Following the regular futsal season, which typically runs from October to February, teams across the UK begin their pursuit of a prestigious national glory in the postseason competitions.

The National Championship involves the top 12 teams from the Premier North and South divisions competing for the coveted title, while teams from lower leagues vie for the National Trophy.

We look at which teams were successful at this year’s men’s and women’s Championship and Trophy finals below.

Men’s Championship

Champions: Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire’s men’s futsal team dominated their competition all season long, and finished strong with a 7-3 win against Nottingham Trent.

The undefeated Premier South champions won all 10 games to claim the league title and followed it up with a National Championship to complete the perfect season.

Women’s Championship

Champions: Durham

Premier North winners Durham defended their National Championship crown with a dominant display in this year’s final, defeating Hartpury 10-1.

After ten consecutive league victories, the reigning champions scored 40 goals conceded only 6 goals on their way to winning back-to-back National Championship.

Men’s Trophy

Champions: Warwick

Midlands Tier 1 runners up Warwick defeated Brunel 7-4 in this year’s Trophy final to pick up the university’s first ever futsal silverware.

Following a 4-4 thriller in the first round that saw them advance after winning the shootout, the 2023 Trophy winners got stronger with each round and proved themselves to be one of the best futsal teams in the country.

Women’s Trophy

Champions: Cardiff

Women’s Western Tier 1 champions Cardiff were superb in their 9-4 victory against Strathclyde, completing an unbeaten season and historic league and cup double.

The Welsh side recently added to their already successful season by securing promotion to the Premier South, the highest division of UK university Futsal.
