During the 2021/22 season, British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) delivered 124 sporting events throughout the year for more than 50 different sports.
Every year, teams and individuals compete to win leagues, cups, and tournaments, with the winners of each event earning BUCS Points for their university.
With over 112,000 points being won by 146 different UK institutions in the past year, the number of opportunities for students to get involved in sport during their university years continues to grow.
After a record-breaking year for UK university sport which saw over 100,000 athletes compete in BUCS competitions, we look at this year’s Overall Champion and the top 10 BUCS points leaders from the 2021/22 season.
What are BUCS Points?
All teams that compete in BUCS competitions throughout the season can earn points for the University. Points are awarded for individual and team performances in leagues, cups and tournaments.
These points feed into an overall table, creating a national sport ranking for higher education institutions in the UK.

Loughborough University continues its BUCS dominance by winning an extraordinary 41st consecutive title.
Loughborough University have been officially announced as 2021/22 BUCS Overall Champions.
Winning BUCS titles in a number of sports including Football, Tennis, and Handball, Loughborough Students amassed a staggering total of 8,034 points this season; almost 1,500 points clear of second place, University of Nottingham.
The number 1 ranked university in the world to study sport earned the most BUCS Points in Athletics, Swimming, Basketball, and Football, and also secured a number of Conference Cup and Trophy wins.
