An annual tradition since 2016, universities around the world will today celebrate the International Day of University Sport (IDUS).

The International Day of University Sport (IDUS) helps create links between universities and their local communities through sport, physical activity, and healthy living.

Proposed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and officially endorsed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO), the day aims at confirming the importance of sport in universities and their role as providers of quality physical and sports education.

Celebrated every year on the 20th of September, the day also offers an opportunity for educational institutions around the world to share knowledge on key issues relating to the development of the university sports movement worldwide and to improve awareness of the importance of sport in educational institutions.

FISU Acting President, Leonz Eder spoke on the day of celebration:

“I am happy to see each year all the activities happening worldwide for the International Day of University Sport – IDUS – and would like to thank you all for the great commitment. Let us not only think of sport and do sport on this special day, but let us take this unifying day as an opportunity to strive for and implement sport and exercise daily, to let it become part of everyday life on campus and in our routines. We wish you much joy and success in doing so!”

The importance of sport at university

The National Governing Body of university sport in the United Kingdom (BUCS) has a long-standing relationship with the International University Sports Federation (FISU), having been affiliated since 1951. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland representative team, GB Students regularly compete in the bi-annual FISU World University Championships.

As one of the leading nations for international university sport, the UK is home to some of the best sporting universities in the world. With over 5,000 teams competing across 50 different sports each academic year, there are a great number of opportunities for anyone with a sporting interest to get involved in sport during their university years.
