As the esport industry continues to expand globally, so have the opportunities to get involved with gaming whilst studying at a UK university.
Across the UK, students have the option of joining esport clubs that allow them to experience competitive esport against other universities, or the opportunity to join a community and play their favourite games for fun.
The growth of esports has seen universities across the country open their own esport centres, quipping their students with the latest high-end gaming PCs. It’s also becoming increasingly common to see some of the more competitive esport teams offer scholarships to reward talented players.
Rifle shooting is a sport that demands great concentration, a strong mental approach, coupled with the ability to adjust to the conditions and a solid aim.
U.K. university clubs tend to shoot weekly at local shooting grounds or ranges in the afternoon/evenings and compete in various competitions throughout the year, including the annual BUCS Rifle championship events.
Though U.K. universities do ask anyone who doesn’t have their own license to complete a taster session before you will allow them to attend one of the shoots, for safety reasons.
Student Gaming In The UK
Whilst esports has seen a rapid rise in popularity over recent years, making it one of the faster-growing clubs and sports on the campus of many UK universities, it is not a new UK university sport.
The UK university esport community is already well established. The UK’s largest university esport community dates back to 2010 and many esport clubs have a history of competing in various titles prior to this.
In the 2020/21 academic year over 20,000 students from 100 UK universities entered tournaments and social gaming events. Across all universities, game titles and divisions, over 1,700 teams took part in the 2020/21 UK university esport season, and that number is expected to continue to grow year on year.
Competitive Gaming Opportunities
UK University esport provides students with the opportunity to represent their university in official competitive events against other UK university teams. At the highest level, students have the opportunity to compete for a range of prizes and qualifications for further events.
University esport clubs will enter into a wide range of leagues and tournaments throughout the academic year, competing for National Championships in most game titles.
Winners of selected UK national tournaments will qualify to compete in the European University Esport Masters. Those that proceed to the UE Master’s will take part in the largest collegiate European competition, representing the UK against some of Europe’s strongest collegiate teams from 16 different countries with the goal of becoming the European Champion.
Some of the UK’s most competitive UK university gaming teams can also reward talent gamers with specific esport scholarships.
