Male and female lacrosse players regularly take to the field at universities throughout the U.K.

Over the last decade, lacrosse has been one of the fastest growing sports in U.K. university sport. Since 2007, there has been over 150% increase in the number of teams available for students to join whilst attending university. Today there are now a total of 15 women’s leagues and 11 men’s leagues, comprised of over 230 teams in total.

Student lacrosse players have the opportunity to compete in both leagues and cup competitions for their university. The season will commence in September and games will be played on a weekly basis through to March. Like in many U.K. university sports, the lacrosse season will conclude at BUCS Big Wednesday where the national championships will be decided.

Some of the premier lacrosse teams in the country can train as often as four times per week, working with well qualified coaches and have further sessions to include strength and conditioning as well as video analysis.

Many U.K. university lacrosse teams will also hold connections with local clubs to provide their players with further coaching and playing opportunities alongside their university studies.

Many universities will enter multiple teams into leagues to provide players of all ability levels the chance to experience competitive lacrosse whilst at university. It’s common for universities to have a first team for their more experienced players, and a second team for those who are newer to the sport. Though some universities may have a bigger lacrosse community and offer as many as six competitive teams.
