The British Universities and Collegiate Sports system – commonly known as BUCS – has provided some incredible entertainment over the past year and it is only going to get better. With over 104,728 students playing across 25,000+ fixtures scheduled for the season, the opportunity to play competitive sport while pursuing a degree is one of the biggest attractions for UK university sport for many of our international student athletes.
With the 2026/2027 season having just got underway, we take a look at the teams to watch, while highlighting that your athletic and academic development goes beyond rankings. The best university for you is the one that aligns with your sporting ambitions, academic interests and long-term goals.

Loughborough University Wins Record 45th Championship
Loughborough managed to extend their record winning run to a 45th year-ending championships while also achieving a better points tally from 9,872 to 10,170, which marked a back-to-back record-breaking season. They were able to stave off competition from Durham and Nottingham who have proven to be harsh competitors over recent years as well as University of Exeter who maintained their 4th place finish with a higher points tally from the previous season.

Following up, are Edinburgh, Birmingham and Bath who kept up with their fine form in protecting their positions from the 2024/2025 season, with Edinburgh and Birmingham improving their points tally, while Newcastle missed out on last seasons score by a mere 3.5 points. There is a slight change to this season’s rankings with University of Bristol and Cardiff University taking the 9th and 10th spot. Narrowly missing out on the list came Nottingham Trent by 23 points followed by University of Stirling and University of St Andrews.

The Rising Contenders in UK University Sport
While the BUCS Rankings table shows the best performing universities who compete in majority of the sports it is important to highlight that there are plenty more sport programmes around the country that shine who may have not been given recommendation.
A university’s position in the table does not necessarily reflect the quality of every individual sports programme it offers. Some institutions may have particularly strong teams in specific sports, provide excellent coaching and facilities, or offer opportunities to compete at a high level without necessarily accumulating enough points to feature in the top ten.
For international student-athletes, this is an important consideration when choosing where to study. The right university is not always the one at the top of the rankings, but the one that best matches an athlete’s sporting ambitions, academic interests and personal goals. Exploring individual university programmes can reveal opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked, whether that means competing for a national title, developing under experienced coaches or balancing competitive sport with a degree.
Here is a look at some universities who are prime examples of choosing the right programme for your needs:
- 36th – University of West England – Won 4 of the last 5 American Football Championships.
- 33rd – University of Essex – Volleyball (3rd), Basketball (3rd), Tennis (Premier Division)
- 51st – Hartpury – Rugby Union (3rd) – Operating only 10 specialised sports academies designed for elite and competitive athlete development.
- 20th – Cardiff Metropolitan University – Football (6th/41), whilst competing against the best teams in the country they also have a pro team pathway to the Welsh Premiership with Cardiff Met FC – previous participants of the Europa League.
