In the third and final part of our BUCS Big Wednesday 2023 preview, we look at which teams will be playing for national glory in six sports: Squash, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Wheelchair Basketball.

Championship Final Previews: Sports S-W
Squash
Two powerhouses in UK university squash will once again feature in the Squash Championship finals as UWE and Birmingham go head to head in both men’s and women’s finals.
In the men’s Championship final, Premier National champions UWE will be looking to retain their national title in a repeat of last year’s final against Birmingham. The two teams have already met twice this season, with UWE winning both of the league fixtures by a considerable margin.
After losing 3-2 in last year’s final, Birmingham have another shot at national glory this time around. The Premier National South champions will meet UWE for the third time this season, with the series currently tied 1-1.

Table Tennis
Hosts Nottingham will look to defend their national titles in both the men’s and women’s Championship finals.
With both of Nottingham’s men’s and women’s teams yet to lose a single match this season, the reigning UK university table tennis champions are well placed to deliver back-to-back titles.
In the men’s table tennis Championship final, local rivals Nottingham Trent will attempt to spoil the party. Women’s Premier South champions Central Lancashire will be hoping to stop the hosts.

Tennis
Bath and Stirling, two of the finest university tennis teams in the UK, will compete against each other in the finals of both the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships.
After suffering defeat in last year’s final to Loughborough, Stirling will have another shot at national glory as they take on Bath in the men’s Championship final.
Premier National champions Bath are still undefeated this season and will look to finish the year on an even higher note by adding a national title to their resume.

Volleyball
This year’s Men’s Volleyball Championship final will be contested between last year’s winners Essex and Durham. Premier South champions Essex are unbeaten going into the final game of the season as they look to defend their national title against Premier North champions Durham.
Hosts Nottingham will have a chance to dethrone the reigning champions Durham in the Women’s Championship final. Nottingham’s only two defeats of the season have both come to Durham who only dropped one game on their way to becoming Premier North champions.
Volleyball Finals
Women’s Trophy | Anglia Ruskin vs. Aberdeen 12:00PM – 2:00PM |
Men’s Trophy | Strathclyde vs. Oxford 9:30AM – 11:30PM |
Women’s Championship | Nottingham vs. Durham 8:00PM – 10:00PM |
Men’s Championship | Essex vs. Durham 5:30PM – 7:30PM |
Water Polo
Reigning national champions Edinburgh return to defend their national title in this year’s final against Premier North champions Durham. The two teams have played twice already in the league this year, with Durham winning both 13-9 and 14-9.
Durham return to the Women’s Championship final after losing out to St Andrew’s last year. They will be taking on the hosts Nottingham in what will be the third time the teams have met this year. Similar to the men’s team, Durham also lead the season series 2-0.
Water Polo Finals

Men’s Trophy | Cambridge vs. Liverpool 9:30AM – 11:00AM |
Women’s Championship | Durham vs. Nottingham 3:15PM – 5:00PM |

Wheelchair Basketball
Last year’s runners-up Cardiff Met will look to avenge their defeat to hosts Nottingham as they take on Worcester in only the second-ever BUCS Wheelchair Basketball Championship final.
Both teams arrive in excellent form with Cardiff Met having dominated the Southern Tier 1 division, and Worcester winning the Midlands Tier 1 division.
