Discover the Top 10 BUCS Ranked Universities of 2025/26 and What the Rankings Really Mean
The 2025/26 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) season brought thousands of student-athletes together to compete in leagues, knockout competitions and national championships across the UK.
Loughborough University claimed its 45th consecutive BUCS title, finishing another remarkable season ahead of the UK’s leading university sports programmes.
But what does it take to reach the top ten, and how are the rankings decided?
With the 2026/27 season now underway, we’re looking back at the final standings, exploring how universities earn their BUCS points and explaining why the overall rankings don’t always reflect the best opportunities for individual student-athletes.
What is BUCS?
British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK, bringing together universities and student-athletes through competitive sport.
With over 50 sports on offer, from football and basketball to athletics, swimming and tennis, BUCS provides opportunities for students to represent their universities in competitions across the country.

How do universities earn BUCS points?
BUCS points are not simply awarded for winning individual matches. Instead, universities earn points through eligible final league positions, progress in knockout competitions and performances at championship events. The exact allocations vary by competition and sport.
League positions: Teams can earn points based on where they finish in eligible BUCS leagues.
Knockout competitions: Progressing through qualifying rounds and reaching later stages can add further points, depending on the competition.
Championship events: Eligible individual and team performances in sports such as athletics and swimming can also contribute to the university total.

Loughborough University wins its 45th consecutive BUCS title
Loughborough continued its extraordinary run at the top of UK university sport, securing a 45th consecutive overall BUCS championship. It became the first university to break the 10,000-point barrier, an achievement that reflects success across a wide range of sports rather than one standout team.
So how does one university collect more than 10,000 points? The answer is the combined contribution of its teams and individual athletes. Loughborough reported more than 3,300 athletes contributing to its 2025/26 season, with championship successes in sports including tennis, badminton, hockey, netball and basketball.

Nottingham finished second, with Durham and Exeter completing the top four. Remarkably, the top eight universities retained exactly the same positions as the previous season, highlighting the consistency of the UK’s leading university sports programmes. Further down the table, Bristol climbed one place to ninth, while Cardiff entered the top ten at the expense of Nottingham Trent.

The standings highlight the importance of consistent performance across a university’s sporting programme. Success in multiple leagues, championships and events can make the difference over a full season.
Do the BUCS rankings reveal the best university for your sport?
Not necessarily. The overall table rewards performance across a broad range of competitions. It is a useful measure of sporting success, but it does not tell you everything about the strength of a university’s programme in one particular sport.
A university may finish outside the overall top ten while competing at an excellent level in football, rugby, basketball, volleyball or another discipline. Some institutions specialise in fewer sports, which can limit their overall points total even when individual teams are highly competitive.
There is a clear example within the top ten itself: Exeter ranks fourth in the overall BUCS table, but sits first in the separate BUCS hockey points table. Different sports can produce different leaders.

The overall BUCS rankings tell only part of the story. Look at the individual sports standings and a different picture emerges, with universities outside the top ten leading the way in their respective disciplines.
